What is SlingPlayer for Roku? How does it work?

SlingPlayer for Roku is a feature that teams up your Slingbox and SlingPlayer for iPhone, SlingPlayer for iPad, or SlingPlayer for Android Phones with your Roku streaming player. With SlingPlayer on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, you can stream your TV programs to the Roku player, and onto your TV. Just make sure that you've got a SlingTV/Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD, or Slingbox SOLO, as well as the latest version of SlingPlayer for your iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone. Then download the SlingPlayer app for your Roku player, and you'll be all set to go.

Sounds great! Can I do this from anywhere?

You only need to make sure that your smartphone or tablet and your Roku streaming player are connected to the same network ... usually this means your home network. Also, be sure that your smartphone or tablet has Wi-Fi active!

I downloaded the SlingPlayer for Roku channel to my Roku - now what do I do?

Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone has the latest version of SlingPlayer installed on it. Then launch SlingPlayer on your phone or tablet, and connect to your SlingTV/Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD or Slingbox SOLO. Tap the screen to display the controls, then tap the Roku stream icon, to the right of the volume slider. Roku-stream.ashx On an iPad, this icon appears in the upper right corner of the screen.

These current Roku models are supported:

Can I use my Roku remote control to change channels?

Not while you're using SlingPlayer for Roku. When you use SlingPlayer for Roku, your Roku streaming player disregards all commands sent from the remote control. You must use your smartphone or tablet to control the TV program.

I don't have an Android smartphone, iPhone, or an iPad, how do I use the SlingPlayer channel for Roku?

To use SlingPlayer for Roku, you need to have a SlingTV/Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD, or Slingbox SOLO, as well as the SlingPlayer app running on an Android smartphone, an iPhone, or an iPad.

Sometimes the video going to the TV via the Roku stops, or doesn't look very good. Why might that be happening?

Remember that the video signal is being initiated by the phone or tablet, then handed off to the Roku streaming player to make a direct connection with the Slingbox. The phone or tablet maintains a separate connection with the Slingbox to send IR commands. For the best video quality, make sure that both your mobile device and your Roku player have a good Wi-Fi signal available. (It may also be possible to connect your Roku player to the network via ethernet cable.) Any time the Wi-Fi signal isn't so good, performance may suffer.

Can I use other apps on my mobile device while I’m streaming through SlingPlayer for Roku to my TV?

Yes, you can now use other apps on your phone or tablet, or even turn your device off! And you no longer have to start streaming on your mobile device before you hand off to your Roku - you can hand off your video stream to SlingPlayer for Roku without starting a stream on your phone or tablet!

Will my unsupported Roku device show up in SlingPlayer?

No, SlingPlayer does not show unsupported Roku devices.

My Roku device should be supported, but it doesn't work with my Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Does this work with SlingPlayer for Windows Phone 7?

No, Roku support is not available on Windows Phone 7 phones.

Are all smartphones supported? Are tablets supported?

Two types of smartphones are supported: iPhone and iPod touch models that are able to run the latest version of SlingPlayer for iPhone; also Android smartphone models that can run the latest version of SlingPlayer for Android Phones. No other smartphone models are supported at this time. The only tablet that is supported at this time is the iPad.

What version of Apple iOS is supported?

iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models that can run iOS 7.x or later.

What version of Android is supported?

Android smartphones running Android 2.2+.

Does GoogleTV work the same way? I don't see my device in the list.

No, SlingPlayer for Roku only works with Roku devices. Other brand devices do not work with it.

I can’t see the Roku icon on my supported device — what can I do to troubleshoot this?

If you don't see the Roku icon, try these steps:

  • Make sure the SlingPlayer app on your mobile device is up-to-date.
  • Make sure that your mobile device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku player.
  • Stop streaming and start streaming again on the SlingPlayer app.
  • Reboot the Roku player (it may take up to 5 minutes after rebooting for the Roku to be discovered).
  • Reset the Roku’s network connection.
  • If you still can't connect, you can manually establish a connection to your Roku player.
    • Select Settings from the disconnected screen of SlingPlayer on your mobile device, and scroll down to Add Roku player.


    • Key in the IP address of your Roku player. This can be found by selecting Settings -> About on your Roku player.


    • You should now be able to connect to your Roku player.
